Crack Stitching & Grout Repairs Adelaide

Finish 09 / 09

Grout Repairs & Crack StitchingAdelaide

Fix the cause, stitch the crack, then make it disappear.

Overview

Stop the movement, then hide the evidence

Adelaide's reactive clay soils move. They swell in a wet winter, shrink through a dry summer, and masonry walls above them crack — through mortar beds, through bricks, and diagonally across openings where the stress concentrates.

Filling that crack achieves nothing. It will reopen in the next cycle, usually wider. Crack stitching addresses it structurally: helical stainless steel bars are bedded into slots cut across the crack at regular courses, tying the masonry back together and redistributing the load across the wall rather than through one line of weakness.

We then repoint, make good and match the surrounding finish so the repair is invisible. Where the underlying cause is drainage, footing movement or salt damp, we will tell you that plainly rather than quietly rendering over it.

Why specify it

What this finish gives you

01

Structural, not cosmetic

The wall is tied back together, not filled in.

02

Cause diagnosed first

We identify why it moved before we quote the repair.

03

Invisible reinstatement

Repointed and made good to match the surrounding wall.

04

Non-corrosive

Stainless helical bars will not rust and spall the masonry.

05

Heritage suitable

Lime-compatible mortars for period and listed buildings.

06

Minimal disruption

Localised slot cutting, no wall rebuild in most cases.

Our specialist process

Four controlled stages

Decorative work fails at the preparation stage far more often than at the finish stage. This is how we make sure it does not.

01

Scope, finish & programme review

Confirming the system, the sample, the sheen and where the finish starts and stops.

02

Substrate assessment & preparation

Moisture, movement, flatness and porosity resolved before any finish coat is considered.

03

Specialist finish application

Hand application in thin successive coats, to the approved sample, under controlled conditions.

04

Detailing, inspection & handover

Terminations, protection removal, joint inspection under working light, and care guidance.

Specification notes

The details worth writing into a spec. We are happy to review documentation before tender and provide system data for submission.

Talk to us about a spec
  • Establish whether movement is active before repair; a structural engineer's assessment is warranted on significant or progressive cracking.
  • Address drainage, plumbing leaks and tree root causes before stitching.
  • Use lime-compatible mortar on solid masonry — cement pointing on soft brick accelerates face spalling.
  • Bars must extend a minimum bonded length either side of the crack into sound masonry.

FAQ

Grout Repairs & Crack Stitching — your questions answered

Not through the stitched section, provided the underlying cause has been addressed. Stitching redistributes stress across the wall. If the ground beneath is still moving from a drainage issue or a tree, the wall will simply find the next weak point — which is why we insist on diagnosing the cause first.

For fine, stable, historic cracking, usually not. For cracks that are widening, wider than about five millimetres, or accompanied by doors and windows binding, yes — and we would rather tell you that than take the job blind.

Yes. We match mortar colour, aggregate and joint profile, and source matching or reclaimed brick where face replacement is needed. On heritage work we use lime-based mortars appropriate to the original construction.
