Overview
What Venetian plaster actually is
Venetian plaster is a traditional decorative finish with origins dating back to ancient Rome. Made from slaked lime putty and finely ground marble, it is applied in multiple wafer-thin layers and compressed with a steel trowel until the surface burnishes to a stone-like depth.
What separates it from paint — or from the printed imitations sold as 'Venetian look' — is that the movement is structural. Light enters the translucent lime, scatters through the marble, and returns differently depending on where you stand. A wall finished this morning will read as three different surfaces across a single day.
We apply authentic lime systems across Adelaide: Marmorino for a soft matt stone, Stucco Veneziano for high polish, and Grassello for the deepest mirror burnish. Every wall is trowelled by hand, on site.

Talk to us about a spec- Substrate must be level 5 set or steel-trowelled render; Venetian amplifies flatness defects rather than hiding them.
- Allow full cure of new render or set before application — typically 28 days for cementitious substrates.
- Specify sheen by sample board, not by name. 'Polished' means different things to different manufacturers.
- In wet areas, specify a breathable mineral sealer over wax; wax alone will mark under constant water contact.
- Nominate control joints and terminations on drawings — Venetian is best run to a shadow line or trim rather than dying into an arris.

Venetian Plaster — your questions answered
Yes, and it is one of its best applications — the seamless, grout-free surface is why it was used in Venetian bathhouses. It needs the correct sealing system for wet zones, and we do not apply it inside a shower enclosure without a compatible waterproof substrate and mineral sealer specified for immersion-adjacent use.
A textured paint sits on the wall as an opaque film with a printed pattern of movement. Real Venetian is translucent lime and marble compressed into itself, so light passes into the material and back out. Side by side under raking light there is no comparison, and paint systems cannot be burnished to a polish.
Yes. Because it is a mineral system rather than a film, damage can be cut back and re-trowelled, then re-burnished into the surrounding surface. We keep the batch formulation for every project we complete so a repair matches years later.
Typically two to four days on site, depending on substrate condition and the number of coats the sheen requires. Each coat must cure before the next, which is the part that cannot be compressed.
